Switch from Todoist

No export file, and no cliff. Relay reads your Todoist account through the connection it already has, and you can keep one project syncing while you settle in.

Most migrations ask you to leave in one movement: export, import, hope. Relay syncs with Todoist two ways, so you can bring everything across and still have the one shared or work project you cannot abandon yet stay in step in both apps.

Everything arrives in your Inbox

Not scattered across lists, and not filed for you. Every task lands in your Inbox to be processed, the same as anything you type in yourself, carrying what Todoist knew about it.

• The project and section it sat in.
• Its labels, spelled the way you spell them.
• Its deadline, as a Relay due date.
• Its priority, when you had raised it above normal.
• Whether it was a subtask, so you can decide what that meant.

Why nothing is filed for you

Relay could guess. A label called errands looks like a context, and a project looks like a project. Guessing is how you end up rebuilding, inside a new app, the same improvised structure you were trying to leave.

So Relay brings your work over and leaves the deciding to you, with everything Todoist knew sitting in front of you while you do it. Processing a few hundred items sounds like a chore and is usually the most useful hour a switcher spends, because it is the first time in years anyone has looked at the whole list.

How to do it

1. In Relay, open Settings, then Integrations, and connect Todoist.
2. Choose Import from Todoist.
3. Press Read my Todoist, and look at what comes back.
4. Add it to your Inbox.

If it does not look right, one button removes the whole import. That button is still there later, so you can go and read your Inbox properly before deciding.

Worth knowing first

Your dates come across, but nothing is scheduled

A Todoist deadline becomes a Relay due date, and a task with only a due date uses that. Either way the item still waits in your Inbox: a due date in Relay says when something must be done, not that you have committed to a day for doing it. You choose that while processing.

Labels do not become contexts

They arrive as text in the notes. If a label really was a context, you give the item that context while processing it, and it files itself from there.

Subtasks are flagged, not nested

Relay has no subtasks, on purpose: anything with steps is a project. A former subtask says so in its notes, which is your prompt to decide whether its parent was really a project.

Completed tasks stay in Todoist

Only your active tasks come across. Your archive is history, and it is not work.

A project already syncing is skipped

If you have Todoist sync pointed at a project, its tasks are already in Relay, so the import leaves them out and tells you which project it skipped. Otherwise you would have two of everything.

Move without burning the boat

Bring everything over, keep the one project you cannot drop yet in step, and turn Todoist off when you are ready rather than on the day you sign up.
